Do I need a visa?

Some students need visas and some do not. For official advice visit the UK Visas site. Generally, there are three categories;

1. Students from the European Union do not need a visa

2. If your country is on the list of visa nationals  then you will always need to ask for a visa before you come to the UK. There are two kinds of visa you can ask for;

(a) an SVV (Student visitor visa) which is less than 6 months, with no right to work, and no right to extend the visa, but you can have any level of English, even absolute beginner.

(b) a GSV (General student visa) which can be more than 6 months, with right to work 10 hours per week, the ability to extend your visa, but you have to have B1 level of English.

3. If the name of your country is not on the
list of visa nationals  then you are the same as category 2 above, BUT if you only want a student visitor visa you don't need to ask for a visa before you come, you can just ask for one at the airport when you arrive. You should show your school letter to the immigration officer and he/she should stamp your visa like a tourist and then write the letters "SVV" on the stamp with a pen.
