Holland's Pies

This year marks the 160th anniversary of Holland's Pies bakery. They are the North West of England's favourite producer of pies, puddings and pastries.

The company was set up in 1851 by Richard Hollands who originates from Baxenden, Lancashire. Their success is visible across the UK because they continue to produce a wide selection of baked goods.

What are pies, puddings and pastries?

Pies: This is a baked pastry with the filling of meats or fruits. The Pork Pie is a traditional British snack, containing chopped/cured pork with pork jelly. This can be eaten as a snack cold or as part of a meal.

Puddings: This is similar to the pie, but the pastry is very soft. The most popular is steak and kidney pie. Best served hot as part of a meal.

But if you go to the shops and ask for a pudding. Most people will point you to the sweet bakery section. This is because puddings are also associated with desserts.

Pastries: You will see these in every coffee shop/cafe because these are light snacks you can enjoy when having a tea or coffee. Pastries are made with short crust pastry and mainly sweet, they are always perfect for a snack.

To celebrate Holland's Pies 160th anniversary, Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) are holding an exhibition dedicated to the brand name. MOSI will include some of Holland's memorabilia and photographs that will tell the story of Holland's Pies over the decades.

So come along next Tuesday 14th February (Valentines Day), where we will visit the MOSI and the Holland's Exhibition. There are lots to see and do and another great thing about it, is that it is Free to go.
