Some facts about the Callan Method

  • There are 12 stages in the Callan Method from Absolute Beginner to Advanced.
  • Each stage takes about one month, if you learn one lesson each day, so the whole course, from beginning to end takes about 12 months, i.e. One year.
  • The Method prepares students to be successful for the Cambridge First Certificate and Cambridge Advanced Certificate, but can also be used to prepare for other examinations of a similar level.
  • The Stages are contained within 7 books, accompanied by 6 CDs.
  • The Callan Method was invented in 1960 by Robin Callan
  • The Callan Method is used all over the world, in more than 20 Countries, and new schools are starting all the time.
  • Many large businesses (like IBM and Fiat) have used the Callan Method to train their employees.
  • In addition the famous novelists Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Paulo Volponi both learnt English using the Callan Method.

Distinctives

The Callan Method uses several distinctive techniques;

1. Repetition
2. Speed
3. Question and Answer format

In addition every Callan Method session (2 or 3 hours) includes reading and writing.

Question and Answer format

In each lesson you learn English in the following way;

1. The teacher asks a question, quickly. The teacher speaks very quickly, like a native speaker. The teacher asks the question twice so that you have another chance to understand.

2. The student answers the question.

3. The teacher help the student answer the question and corrects pronunciation, grammar and any other mistakes.

  • In this way every lesson is like a test of listening, speaking, grammar and sentence construction.
  • Because the teacher corrects you immediately, your learning will progress faster.

A normal Callan Method session

A normal session would be as follows;

1st hour

  • Questions and Answers 25 minutes
  • Reading 10 minutes
  • Written dictations 5 minutes
  • Questions and Answers 10 minutes
  • Break time 10 minutes

2nd hour

  • New work 25 minutes
  • Reading 10 mintues
  • Questions and Answers 15 minutes
  • Break time 10 minutes

Revision sessions are slightly different, in that there is no new work in the second hour and no dictations. These occur before an exam.

Exams take place at the end of each stage. If you fail an exam the teacher may make you repeat a stage. Don't worry; most people pass the exams!
